Driving Vacation in Burgundy and Alsace

My wife and I are planning a driving tour of Burgundy and Alsace. We are planning for about ten days in the two areas. Will this be about the right amount of time to visit the medevial villages, chateaus and wineries in the area? Also, what can we expect of the weather in Late May/early June? Would late September be a better time?

Welcome to the forums, WallyG!

IMO ten days is a decent amount of time to explore a bit of both regions. You could spend a month in either and still have things you would want to do. They are both rich in places worth seeing.

It%26#39;s difficult to predict the weather in France even a few days ahead, let alone a few months. However, *normal* high temps in late May/early June should be around 70°F and while you can expect some rain it would not be normal for it to rain every day or even *most* of any day. But it can of course be warmer or colder or wetter or drier than %26quot;normal.%26quot; I wouldn%26#39;t expect the weather in late September to be all that different, perhaps a little cooler, especially at night.

Given the choice I would recommend that you go in May/June. You will have more daylight hours which will make a stroll after dinner delightful. Also the wine producers will probably be busier in September than and will therefore have less time for visitors. (Not that they will exactly be sitting around working on their suntans in June...)

You mention villages, châteaux and wineries and there are plenty of those of course. There are also wonderful cathedrals, basilicas and churches in both regions, and some fine museums. The Michelin Green Guides to both regions will be a great resource as will Michelin%26#39;s excellent regional road maps. You will need the latetr to get off the main roads and Autoroutes and explore all the hidden villages and lovely rural scenery.

Enjoy the planning!
