french riviera parking

I will be traveling for a week around the area in May. I will rent a car because I am staying and visiting areas fairly far away from the shore. However, we plan to obviously visit Nice, Cannes, Monaco and the towns in between. How difficult is to park in the tourist areas in those cities? Can you park on the street easily? The parkings look very expensive.......Remeber it is in early May.

Thanks!

Monaco has almost no street parking. You will need to park in one of the enormous underground car parks.

Most people in Nice live in apartments without off street parking, so anyone who owns a car needs to park in the street and there is enormous competition for space. Another problem is that people will often make a space by repeatedly bumping the cars in front and behind. You will see that most cars in the city have multiple dents. The locals rarely get these repaired but your rental company will require you to pay for them, so make sure you have full insurance without any collision damage excess.

Parking in most other places will depend on weather and day of the week. For example, I live part of the time in Villefranche. On a rainy week day it will be fairly easy to park but on a sunny weekend almost impossible. Even in May the police occasionally turn drivers away as all parking is full.

You are quite right in thinking that a car is essential for exploring the interior but when visiting the main coastal towns my advice is to use the train or bus.

A couple of years ago when we visited the Riviera, my youngest daughter visited a friend in Monaco. We parked our car in an underground car park in the center of town and my heart sank when I entered the car park. But it was only Eu 8 for about the whole day. That was cheaper than most towns in the UK (and I am not talking about London).

I appreciate that you might be used to cheaper parking in Uruguay but if there are any fellow Brits reading this, don%26#39;t worry. Car parking all around the Riviera is a bargain, compared to Rip Off Britain.

Greetings to deeps,

Nice should definitely be your home base, and although you do not have a whole lot of time, a day trip to Cannes for some great sand beaches would be a treat compared to the pebbly beaches of Nice. There are also some shopping areas that are almost reasonable. The train, which is the only way to go, is about an hour. Monaco, to the east of Nice, is quite impressive to see how the very rich live, but offers some unreasonable shopping, but great sites, such as the world famous casino(proper attire is requested), the Princes Palace, and the greatest Oceanographic Museum in Europe. To me, a must see! Monaco, is about a half hour away, and of course, train is the only way to go. Not forgetting Nice, You%26#39;re liable to want to spend a great deal of time there, as there is truly so much to see. Whatever , or wherever, enjoy!!

From Nice, train times are Villefranche 8 mns, Beaulieu 12 mns, Monaco 25 mns and, in the other direction, Antibes 27 mns, Cannes 41 mns. Get a timetable as soon as you arrive as there are long gaps between trains at times. There is also a bus to Monaco (and beyond) every 15 mns until 8.00pm at, for British people, the scarcely believable cost of 1.30 euros.
