Can I drive across border with rental car?

We are thinking of traveling from Amiens to Brugge in Belgium by car. If we rent %26amp; return in France, can we go across the Belgium border?

That is a question for your car hire company.

Of course you can, you are staying in the Schengen area.

Indeed you have to ask your car rental agency. You personally yes, as it%26#39;s a Schengen country.

I personally do not see what it%26#39;s got to do with any agreement other than the one you have with the car hire company. Schengen refers to people crossing borders, not hire cars. It%26#39;s extremely unlikely that any hire car hired in France could be taken to Britain or even places like Hungary.

I%26#39;d guess it will be OK, but as the others say, make sure the car hire company is aware of your plans at the time you book. Apart from insurance issues, some countries have different requirements for car equipment (though I doubt that this is the case for Belgium). For example, I think both Italy and Spain require cars to carry safety jackets for all passengers (which aren%26#39;t normally supplied with French rental cars), so there may be an additional hire charge to ensure the hirer is %26#39;legal%26#39; when they cross the border.

Just curious. What is a %26quot;car safety jacket?%26quot; Never heard of such a term. Perhaps this is an air bag? We have rented cars in both France and Italy and crossed the borders between these countries with no difficulty.

%26quot;Safety jacket%26quot; is the reflecting orange jacket that you have to wear if your car breaks down for some reason on the highway. This way other drivers will easily see you.

jacket typically worn by road repair crew and traffic control cops in North America

Hi %26quot;Sparks...%26quot;!

Our rental company send us an e-mailed list of the countries we could drive our car into.

You should call and ask. We were not allowed to take the rental car on any ferrys or water barges. It was also in the fine print. You had to have their written permission.

Please do ask the rental car company!

To be honest, I%26#39;m not sure what the proper terminology is, but you get the idea. I heard the law was changed in Italy 2 or 3 years ago, and there was quite a little industry at border crossings, with jackets being sold at high prices to incoming drivers. If the drivers didn%26#39;t buy them, then the Italian police were waiting further down the road ...... .

We rented a car from Hertz in Toulouse at the end of last year, and we were asked when we picked it up if we were planning to drive into Spain - if so, we would have needed to hire reflective / safety / fluorescent jackets. There was some suggestion that they had to be carried in the car interior, not in the malle / trunk / boot. We stayed in France!
