Staying during Worldcup / Campsites

Hey guys,

I plan on heading over to paris for the final stages of the WorldCup rugby 2007. I was thinking of staying at a camping site as most of the hotels will be overly expensive and can imagine most of the hostels being totally booked out. I was wondering what good camping grounds are nearby and whether you can book in advance, or simply rockup during the cup...

Im an aussie who loves his rugby so i want to be in the thick of it, with the rest of the other aussies if possible! Haha, any help would be greatly appreciated, thankyou!

Check out the hostels, they may not be booked yet. I don%26#39;t know of campgrounds, but you%26#39;ll likely be a long way out, which will cost you in travel what you%26#39;d spend on a hostel. Besides, Paris is Paris, it%26#39;s a city worth visiting.

Hi Rob

As Grenelle suggested, check out the hostels as they will be in more central locations than camping sites. Some do take reservations, I assume with a requirement that you give your credit card to secure at least the first night. Le Village in Montmartre seems to take reservations. This thread from a day or so ago has a number of possible websites. The MIJE hostel that Metromole recommends has lots of good reviews and is very central and takes bookings

This is the only camping ground I know of and it is basically mobile homes and it is out near the Bois de Boulogne outside the periphique beside the 16th arrondissement. It would be ok value for 3 of 4 despite the distance but not for one with the cheapest about 60 Euros a night depending whether the game is in September or October (sleeping 4). You would not be in the thick of celebrations or commiserations though - very far from it. Go for a hostel if you can book one

A lot of the UK camping operators use Camping International at Maisons Lafitte http://www.campint.com/ I have heard transport links are good into central Paris, but it%26#39;s obviously not central. If you want a mobile home, google eurocamp or keycamp and you should find something, but it looks fine for tents.

Thanks heaps for your contributions.

Will start looking into some hostels to book! I want to book in advance so i dont miss out on accomodation, but at the same time i dont want commit if i am doing something else. Safest way would be to book in advance? Last thing i want is to be sleeping in the gutter. Thoughts?

Not to say anything bad about rugby, but I am not so sure that it is a very big sport in Europe, so I don%26#39;t think that there will be red lights and a total %26quot;sold-out%26quot; in all of Paris%26#39;s hotels.

But if you worry about it - why not book a room now ?

If you want something cheap (and clean + safe) - I can recommend Hotel Sainte-Marie in the 2nd arrondissement. Very close to metro, and only 58 euro for a single room with private WC+shower. Cheaper (42 euro) if you are willing to share these facilities with other guests. No elevator - but I gather that you are a sporty type.

(I checked out the World Cup Rugby website - the finals are in October, it seems, so there is plenty of time yet. I would nevertheless book in advance)

There are also:

Hotel Picard in the 3rd arr. - 56 euro for room/WC/shower - and only 37 euro for room and shared facilities.

Mary%26#39;s Hotel in the 11th arr - 45 euro for a single room:

Hi Gitte, those are great hotel suggestions but, on the availability score, I was in Paris in early February 2005 when the France v Scotland Rugby game was on and a friend who was joining me from London could only get terribly inconvenient times on Eurostar and the place was awash with men in kilts.

This time all the games are in France and I know lots of Australians (men of course) who are heading there so I think it will be very crowded as all the other countries with teams in the competition will have their Barbarian hordes descending (not speaking about you of course, Rob). Rugby is actually quite popular in France although not to anything like the same extent as soccer.

Obviously you haven%26#39;t spent a lot of time in SW France, Gitte. And the last I checked, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland are all in Europe and all borderline fanatical about rugby. Some parts of Italy are not far behind. Denmark? Hmmmm, probably not...

Some of the preliminary rounds are being played in Marseile and Lyon in September and hotels there are already sold out around the dates of the matches. People are now booking accommodation an hour or more away from these cities.

Rob, there is a campground on the western edge of Paris in the Bois de Boulogne. I%26#39;m not siure of the details but it would certainly be easierr to get back there late at night than to Maisons-Lafitte.

Just BTW, not all the games are being played in France. Some of them are in Scotland and wales.

Maybe we are no great rugby-nation, but 5 minutes ago we just beat the pants off La France in World Cup Men%26#39;s Handball (which opposed to ruby is almost a totally unknown sport in Australia and the US.) It secured our boys the bronze-medal, next time it will be gold !

Thanks yet again for your input!

I really appreciate the information about the hotels, should give me a solid backbone for what i should book. My friends and myself are real party animals and want to be in the thick of it with the boozy aussie supporters and rugby fanatics. Would a hostel be a better approach to this sort of atmosphere i want to achieve? I dont want to be stuck in a hotel with a bunch of old people complaining about us being loud etc haha.

What do you think of the hostel approach to it? Can anyone recommend some good hostels? Looking more for a party, full on fun hostel sort of place. Im really unfamiliar with this so any put helps alot! Thanks
