Nice Life - Your advice please

Can you please suggest a few good hotels close to bus stops /train station, shops, restaurants. We are not %26quot;beach%26quot; persons, only interested in good food, shopping and sightseeing. Ideally no more than 5 mins walk from bus stop and 10 mins to train station.

We want to avoid taking taxis as we hear it%26#39;s very expensive.

Would you please also suggest a few nice seafood restaurants where local residents go.

Many thanks in advance.

You might try the Beau Rivage. We are in the same position as you. We like to take public transport that won%26#39;t break the bank. It is a 2 minute walk to bus stop at Albert 1R. You can take the 98 bus from the airport to and from this stop. Also, you can take the TAM 400 bus from there to St. Paul de Vence. You can take any bus heading to Gare Routiere (2 stops) and then transfer to any bus taking you all over Nice. Another option from Gare Routier is to catch the TAM 112 or bus 82 to Eze Village or the #100 to Monaco. Daily Passes are 4 Euro for unlimited travel and 1.30 Euro for single journey trips.

Hope this helps.

Also, I should add that it isn%26#39;t just expensive. The taxi drivers there are notorious for ripping off tourists. Two years ago we grabbed a taxi from Villefranche to Nice and the driver charged us 55 Euro. Our friends were in the cab in front of us with more luggage than us and the fare was 28 Euro to the same hotel. We inquired at the hotel and they said the fare normally would be somewhere between 25 and 30 Euro.

Hi YKL

For what you have in mind, based on location and reputation, consider

Hotel Boscolo Park - 6 Av de Suede

Hotel Boscolo Plaza - Av de Verdun

Both fairly luxurious, perfectly located for shopping, short walk to bus, train, Promenade and old town, without paying the premium for a sea view. Its just a strip of blue anyway

Also more classic french in four star

Hotel Massena, Rue Giofreddo

Hotel Grimaldi, 15 Rue Grimaldi

In the three star I can recommend

Hotel Vendome, Rue Pastorelli

Hotel Windsor, 11 rue Dalpozzo

All these meet your criteria

Yes, avoid the taxis- take the express bus to town (4 euro including day pass) - the 98 - and get off at Albert 1er Gardens just after it turns off the Promenade

Sea food - Cafe de Turin, Place Garribaldi

Boccaccio, Zone Pietonne

or take your chances with the tourists in the Cours Saleya

Have a good stay - you can%26#39;t fail to!

About those taxis - the Airport run is a regulated fare. Its very generous - to the taxi driver - and the four or five times I found myself having to use one, the driver has stuck meticulously to the regulated fare. It varies from 25 euro to 30 eur, depending on time of day or night.

I can%26#39;t speak for all of them, but French taxi drivers down here at least are generally ok. But if you don%26#39;t know what to expect, and you don%26#39;t agree a fare before you get in, like anywhere , youre a potential mark.

The buses and trains have their own foibles - if you want a little more lowdown on how to get the bestof the system I have some local travel hints - ticketing and stuff - over on my VT pages here

Just remember this is France - things don%26#39;t always go acording to plan!

we stayed at the Windsor once and it is well situated and we liked the hotel -- the garden where one has breakfast is lovely -- the rooms are nothing special but fine -- and we had a nice balcony over the garden

good restaurant in the hotel and we used public transport and walked e.g. bus to Matisse Museum and then walked back down through the interesting residential neighborhoods to the north and stopped off at the Chagal museum on the way --

I would like to thank you all for the travelling tips.

As we would like to visit as many places as possible during our 3 days in Nice, we are thinking for joining a local tour visit some villages in Provence including Grasse + Gourdon.

Can anyone recommend a good sightseeing tour @ reasonable price?

YKL,

Unless you absolutely love perfume and need to know its history, I would miss out Grasse. It is probably the most disappointing place I have ever visited, you can do it in 15 minutes.

It also has some of the worst restaurants. I have never heard of a good one, and I did research it before we went.

There are so many fabulous places to visit around the area, that it would be a shame to spend your limited time here.

If you do go, do not take pizza in the square. The pizza appeared to be based in a tinned sugary sauce - the worst pizza ever!

I woulod definitely replace Grasse by Vence and/or St-Paul-de-Vence and to make it better they are on the way to Gourdon.

If you did not know Gourdon is part of the Gorges du Loup. They can be visited either arriving from Grasse or from Tourrette-sur-Loup (right after Vence). I%26#39;d suggest the latter as you are driving on the mountain side instead of the cliff side. If you are afraid of heights (onlya bit) that would help you drive to Gourdon. The drive is scenic but slow as there are lots of curves and some mountains are steep. It is a very nice drive.
