Read this in the New York Times this morning and enjoyed it a lot. Thought some of you might be interested as well.

Thanks for posting this, Les. i had read other reviews suggesting that Hussey was a bit sloppy with the fundamental historical facts. However, I will be ordering a copy of his book as soon as I get a moment.
I did like this sentence: “The Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Coeur, Notre-Dame are all part of a global visual culture, a Disneyfied baby language that distorts and destroys real meaning.” How often is this evidenced in postings on this forum?
Incidentally, I dislike, especially in what is supposedly a work of scholarship, the references to %26quot;Notre-Dame%26quot; and %26quot;the Sacré-Coeur.%26quot; They are, at a minimum, Notre Dame cathedral and the Sacré Coeur basilica. Sloppy shorthand is one thing on a TA forum, another in a serious (?) work of history. Isn%26#39;t Hussey here contributing, however slightly, to the very thing he is complaining about?

Ha...I hadn%26#39;t thought about it that way...interesting!
There are so many books on Paris history..it%26#39;s hard to choose the %26quot;good%26quot; ones that aren%26#39;t too pedagogical...
