Vintage Shopping trip report one

There were several replies to my Designer Shopping with requests for vintage info. I have begun the search, but the vintage shops are spread out, so it will take several days to get a serious sample. Here is the start :

Consignment shop on rue de Courcelles in the 17th. Not really vintage, just pre-owned designer. Found a pair of killer Hermes pumps for (only) 240E (I did not buy them). The clothing here is certainly haute couture, but the prices are high (I bought Dior boots, new at the Sales for less than the used ones were one sale for here) BUT they had some shoes that had just come off the catwalks from fashion week. That is to say, NEXT season%26#39;s models.

ST Germain des Pres Vintage shops - I didn%26#39;t get the names of the shops and the streets are so small, you can%26#39;t read the street names on a map! The street is rue de Bourbon le Chateau and is the continuation of rue de l%26#39;Abbaye, just behind the Abbaye St Germain.

Shop One, on your right as you turn on to the street from Buci, after the cafe. You%26#39;ll see it. Has some good vintage pieces. Especially the coats selection. About 100 dresses to choose from. Staff is disinterested, at best, but everything was clean and there was a fair selection of designers.

Shop Two, right next the Shop One, this place is all designer, but not necessarily vintage. The owner smokes and then burns incence to cover the smell. It has gotten into the fabrics.

Shop Three, turn left down the alleyway, Passage de la Rette Bouchette and look to the shops on your left, about half way down the street. This place is a living museum. My daughter (9) was afraid of the owner with her two remaining teeth, smoker%26#39;s hack and ostentatious dress, but my husband was fascinated with her. All I can say, is she knows her clothes!!! Within two minutes I was holding a 1961 Dior Haute Couture black cocktail dresses with built in corset and garters! My bad luck... it was a size too big. Lots of amazing pieces in this shop, including an 1890%26#39;s wedding gown, 1910%26#39;s tea gown and a black beaded shift fromt he 1920%26#39;s. Lots of costumes, Victorian tops and other marvels were unearthed, as well. During our visit, she received a call from a NY based vintage guy and as we left, she told me that if I returned in a week, she%26#39;d find some more for me to try on, now that she knew what would look good on me and what I was looking for. Even huby wants to go back to this one with me!!!

Coming soon.... the Little Black Dress shop and the consignment shops on rue de la Pompe.

Since I never get out of my 7th arrondissement... I can add one vintage shop that is (what a surprise) next to my sushi joint on rue de l%26#39;université, between malard and surcouf.

phread, I am positively salivatin%26#39; at your report. Thank goodness we leave in March so I can add some of these to my vintage day. It didn%26#39;t start off as a vintage day but with your report I had to add one. Thanks!!!!!!!

yeah, thanks phread! I am saving your tips for my next trip (which will be for ME as opposed to my lovely children:) This stuff is right up my alley - that last place sounds like a real experience. More incentive to practice my French, as I would imagine having a command of the language would be helpful when doing this kind of shopping...

Please keep us posted on your seach for THE dress!!

Phread,

Shop 3 sounds very interesting. Having worn clothes in the 40s, on, ( so not vintage to me) I like the fact tat she has earlier decades in stock. I love tea gowns and flapper styles as well as 1930s.

Thanks. Good luck with your hunt.

What I would give to have a pocket book full of Euro%26#39;s and a visit to each one of the above shops on a day I was feeling skinny. There is a God.
