This article provides information about several places in Paris to sample and buy cigars:

À La Civette
157 rue St.-Honoré, 1st arr.,
(011) 33 1 42 96 04 99
Founded in 1716 in the Palais-Royal, this is Paris%26#39; oldest and most famed cigar store. The word civette is related to an old French word meaning %26quot;wild cat%26quot;; the French initially imported tobacco as a perfume and strengthened the smell by rubbing it against the animal. The store, run by 32-year-old Patrice Viot, opened in its present location, just across the street from the Comédie Française, in 1754. Davidoff took it over in 1996 and renovations were completed in 1997. À La Civette stocks more than 5,000 cigars. Most French ministries and fashion and Champagne houses buy their cigars here.
Boutique Lemaire
59 avenue Victor Hugo, 16th arr.,
(011) 33 1 45 00 75 63
This is Paris%26#39; second-oldest cigar shop, founded a century ago by the Lemaire family. It%26#39;s located a block away from Boutique 22, on the other side of the street. Guy Pihan has run it for the past few decades, gradually expanding the selection and quality of accessories. He supplies many of Paris%26#39; finest restaurants, including Guy Savoy, and many of the finest hotels, including the Ritz. The shop is small and jammed with regulars looking for their everyday smokes.
Boutique 22
22 avenue Victor Hugo, 16th arr.,
(011) 33 1 45 01 81 41
Francis Mathieu took over this shop near the Arc de Triomphe in 1983. A true cigar lover, he offers a wide selection--particularly strong in Cubans--in a comfortable, elegant environment. He also stocks fine accessories from Dunhill and other quality suppliers. Mathieu%26#39;s daughter Carole runs the shop. All the staffers speak good English.
La Civette de Quatre Temps
Centre Commercial des 4, La Défense,
(011) 33 1 47 74 75 28
La Civette de Quatre Temps looks like an ordinary tobacco shop; in addition to the wide array of Cuban, Dominican and Honduran cigars, it sells regular cigarettes and candies. It%26#39;s located in a large modern mall right near the La Défense office complex. Though a bit far afield, it%26#39;s a well-run shop to visit if you%26#39;re in the area.
Tabac Georges V
22 avenue Georges V, 8th arr.,
(011) 33 1 47 23 44 75
From the outside, Tabac Georges V, just off the Champs-Élysées and right across the street from the George V hotel, looks like any other French cigarette shop. But tucked away inside is an extensive selection of cigars--and not just the usual Cubans, either. There%26#39;s a good selection of smokes from the Dominican Republic and Honduras. Owner Maurice Sermet, a warm and affable gentleman, plans to install a walk-in humidor and modernize the rest of his store.

travelnutty-
Just wanted to find out if your post from 8/05 is still accurate about the stores (are they still there, etc.)? My husband likes a good cigar now and then and I thought it would be a fun surprise for him to %26quot;happen%26quot; to walk by one of the stores so he could buy some cigars during our upcoming trip.
Thanks

I%26#39;ve been to a la Civette the past two years to buy pipe tobacco for my pet-sitter... no special blends, though, such as what we found in Zurich and Amsterdam.
I imagine these places are still there - the more central ones can easily be visited on your way to somewhere.
There are also some %26#39;Cuban%26#39; smoking rooms (I forget if they sell cigars).. I%26#39;ve seen ads for one or two places in the Montparnasse area.
I don%26#39;t think France produces any or much tobacco products - I believe it%26#39;s all imported. It was funny to me to consider buying tobacco from Virginia to take home for a gift!

thanks travelnutty - we%26#39;ll try to check out these locations and see what they have to offer!

Tobacco is still grown in the south-west (Périgord) for the characteristic brown Gauloise cigarette (a strong, but nice taste).

France also has something of a small %26#39;..cigar industry..%26#39;, (since 1995) with tobacco production based in the Pyrénées-Atlantique region--Béarn. The%26#39; industry%26#39; seems to be based around Navarrenx...with the NAVARRE brand
