Dunkerque has a brilliant museum on the Evacuation of May 1940, with the ludicrous name of %26quot;Memorial du Souvenir%26quot;, so you would never guess! Reading your other post, I am not sure how it will entertain the 2x3y-os, but the 9yo should like it. It%26#39;s crammed into a series of chambers in the old fortifications, so not exactly state of the art, but the photographs of all those thousands of men on the beaches are staggering. Afterwards, you could go and have a run about the empty beaches at Malo-les-Bains (just N of Dunkerque) and compare today%26#39;s emptiness with then. (And have some good mussels and chops at the Roi de la Moule on the seafront!)
Another Dunkerque museum with crazy name is the Modern Art museum (called LAAC), not far from the above. It has some quite hands-on bits for young children on the first floor, I think. Very colourful works on show, and some quite jokey things outside in the park (huge scultpure made of welded anchors).
