paris to rome-train or air?

I am travelling from Paris to Rome in early May 2007 with 2 child (aged 4 %26amp; 9 yrs). I have been told air travel is stressful (ie and hectic to Rome and that using the train would be less stressful. If going by air I was hoping to pick up a cheap flight using Ryanair or Easyjet. But I was told for such tickets you need to get to the airport at least 2-3 hrs before your flight and allow for 1-2 hrs to get to the airport. Ryanair flys out of Beauvis in Paris. Is it difficult to get to this airport from Paris? Would it be very expensive for transfers?

Train would take 12 hrs and I will lose one day from my intinerary but no checkin or waiting for bags.

Any thoughts or seeds of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

I am hoping to book an apartment in Paris using vrbo.com has anyone used them before? How did they find them.

EasyJet would be by far the easiest way to go, as long as you do not have a ton of luggage. They fly from Orly (ORY) to Ciampino (CIA) both of which are fairly easy to deal with. Orly is generallyy less than 30 minutes from anywhere in central Paris by taxi and probably about a 30€ fare. There is no need to arrive at the airport more than 90 minutes before your departure time.

Ryanair is not a good option as Beauvais is a long way out of Paris and you would probably need to leave your Paris hotel at least 4 hours before the flight. The shuttle from Porte Maillot (13€ pax) leaves 3hrs15 before the flight time.

The train will take 14-15 hours (not 12) by day and involves one or more changes. The only direct train is the night train and that too takes 15 hours. Not my idea of fun with two kids.

EasyJet%26#39;s baggage allowance is 20kg per person plus a carry-on and excess baggage charges are pretty steep. Ryanair is considerably worse — 15kg and you must pay for every bag and very strict weight limits for carry-ons.

thank you irishrvr your information has been very heloful. I have booked an easyjet flight, however it leves 7am, so I plan on being there 4.30ish to be on the safe side. If I order a taxi for 4am do you think it will be difficult to get a taxi at this time? Can I book it the night before? Do you have any suggestions for transfers from Ciampinoi to Rome?

All advice much appreciated.

You%26#39;re welcome!

I%26#39;m as paranoid as the next person about arriving at airports in plenty of time. I think arriving at Orly at 05:30 would be *more* than early enough, but it%26#39;s your call. if your hotel is anywhere in central Paris you should certainly make it to Orly by taxi in 30 minutes (probably a good bit less) at that hour of the morning. Your hotel will be able to book a taxi for you and yes you should arrange this the night before. You should be aware that there will be a few Euros showing on the meter when the taxi arrives at your hotel to pick you up as the meter starts to run when the taxi is dispatched.

I suggest you check on the Rome fiorum about the current preferred method of getting from CIA to wherever you are going in Rome. It%26#39;s been a while since I flew into anywhere other than FCO.

Have a great trip!
