We%26#39;ll be arriving in Paris on May 8th - Armistice Day. How big a holiday is this in Paris? What will be happening?

You have to check the web sites for the museums you want to visit. Some may or maynot be closed.

The Paris web site for museums and monument usually post a list but I checked and I could not see a list on it today. Maybe check later or maybe it is just my computer access is not allowing me to!

I was in Paris on Armistice Day in May 2001. Big parade down the Champs Elysees. A woman actually thanked me (an American) for what the Americans did for France. It was quite moving.

|||

OK, sorry someone has to do this ...

May 8th is NOT Armistice day !!!!

May 8th is the holiday to remember the LIBERATION of France, towards the end of the SECOND World War.

Armistice Day is 11th November, when we remember the signing of the treaty (or Armistice) which ended the FIRST World War.

Anyway - most people treat it as just another day off in May. In addition to the Champs Elysées there will be little ceremonies at various points in the city with veterans gathering. A huge flag flies under the Arc de Triomphe over the tomb of the unknown soldier and its eternal flame.

|||

By the way - almost all of the major museums and sites are open every day except 25th Dec. %26amp; 1st Jan. Unless of course the %26quot;holiday%26quot; falls on the day (Monday for example) that the museum usually closes.

To be completely correct 8th May is VE day - Victory in Europe.

France had been liberated bit by bit from June 6th 1944 in Normandy, 15th August down in the Var. Paris was liberated on 25th August 1944.

|||

Yes I know that, however I didn%26#39;t want to confuse things any more than necessary especially as %26quot;VE Day%26quot; is an English language term.

The French themselves refer to the 8th of May either as %26quot;la fête de la libération%26quot; or a %26quot;fête de la victoire 1945%26quot;.

|||

I will agree with %26quot;Fete de la Victoire %26quot;, sorry for using an English term, but not to Liberation. Each area of France has its own liberation day. The OP is obviously confused already so I think it best not to say something celebrates what it does not. Come South on the 15 th August and you will know that they are celebrating liberation.

Interesting about 15th Aug. I thought it %26quot;just%26quot; Assomption ;-)

Regarding the posted correction:

If you had open my first post with this site:

You would have seen that the correct holiday information for May 8 was included there.
