Hi
We%26#39;re an Irish couple thinking of having our wedding in a chateau near Sarlat.
I%26#39;ve read amazing stuff about the area. I%26#39;m just concerned about whether or not friends will need a car for in and around Sarlat?? We can arrange a group pick-up from the airport etc, however we don%26#39;t want to impose 4 days car hire on top of flights %26amp; accom.
We%26#39;d appreciate your honest thoughts, from those who have been there.
We were also thinking of arranging a group wine tour from the area. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Thaks
Barbara

Congratulations on your wedding. This is a terrific choice for a memorable wedding in a beautiful storybook land. A car is very helpful here but there are some other tour options available (the car might still be the cheaper option and give you greater mobility and freedom of movement). There is another post here in the Sarlat forum concerning some answers to %26quot;public transport%26quot; questions. The following websites have a great deal of helpful info for this Black Perigord (Perigord Noir) area of the Dordogne: www.peritrek.com ---www.best-of-perigord.tm.fr --- www.arachnis.asso.fr/DORDOGNE --- www.grottes-en-france --- www.chateauxcountry.com ---- good luck, a fellow Irishman.

I assume you have checked on French rules? You need to be resident for 40 days and can only get married in a civil ceremony at the Mairie. Thereafter you can rent a chateau for a religious blessing provided you can find a willing Priest.
Check out La Lanterne in Sarlat on here as one of their American guests did a similar thing and posted info about it on trip advisor
Do not consider Sarlat or the region without a car, it can be done, but for that once in a lifetime visit not worth the money saving for the limits it will impose.
For a wine tour you need to be in, or beyond, Bergerac a two and a half hour return journey from Sarlat. Fascinating and memorable
Group transport is very expensive

Thx a million for this info, it%26#39;s so good to know. We%26#39;re going to do a trial run trip ourselves and check out venues with a wedding planner who is local!

You would need a car.
We spent 4 days there last summer and we would have loved to stay much longer!! It is beautiful! You all must take the river boat ride it is so lovely!
We stayed in Beynac and loved it! We stayed at Hotel Restaurant du Chateau Beynac with a pool. It was so close to the river and the boat ride and Monday morn there is a Market in the parking lot. There were at least three wine companies featurd there and they gave out cards so maybe they will be able to arange a wine tour thru them.
You can probably get alot of help from Christoph Kusters the hotel manager --- he and his wife speak English! (33) 05 53 29 19 20.
Right next to the Beynac Castle there are some hotels. The church on the grounds of the castle is a working church. You might be able to get married right there. It is lovely and the Les Ramparts is a very good restaurant! You might be able to do it all right there with just one or two rental car bring people to and from.

Concerning the wine tour Bergerac region offer a wide variety of wine: dry withe bergerac and red one from fair to very good.
But In my opinion there is 2 interesting options (you can make both of course) there is famous sweet withe wine from Montbazillac (like sauternes), you can go to the town of Monbazillac visit Montbazillac casttle with lovely sceneries on the wineyard (musuem of wine inside but they do not produce wine in the castlle) and visit some of the producers on the road (as it is a little bit touristic-but not to much- you will have no difficulties to see the adds)
The other option is for red wine and after the “touristic” tour let’s talk about the connoysseur tour. There is a small region call Pécharmant (on the road from Bergerac to Sarlat you will the add), this appelation is not very known because it is a small production (of only red wine) and very homogeneous in quality, honnestly for a fair price you have a very good price (if you don’t like I will refund you!). As you will have a car (of course!) you can manage by yourself a tour if someone in your group speak french.
Concerning the accomadation there is no chateau in Sarlat but do not miss to go downtown at the sunset or at night to feel the special beauty of the old city
There is certainly many private chateau you can book to do your wedding jus ask to the tourist office if the have listing
I know that you can also book Beynac or Calstenaud chateau for private occassion depending on the month you will do your wedding.
If you have a good budget, you can have a look on relais et chateaux channel hotels
I have been in chateau de la treyne: it is wonderfull from outside but in my opinion “average” inside for the price
This is not a casttle but if you want a very romantic place (maybe in the future) go to spend one night in “le vieux logis” in tremolat (a small charming village), one of my favourite hotel in France (really) and go to see the sunset (with a bottle of pecharmant of course)- or the sunrise with some croissants- in the cingle of tremolat:In my opinion (and I well know France) it is something you don’t have to miss (but this time I will not refund you!)
