There is so much to visit within 50 miles of Sarlat. In July, however, everything will be so crowded. Any chance of going at a time other than July or August?

If you must go in July, arrive at popular sights early in the day. Caves like Font de Gaume, Peche Merle, etc... that allow you to see actual cave drawings limit daily guests, so make reservations well in advance. Same goes for the great limestone formations in the Gouffre de Padirac, east of Sarlat. In July, skip Rocamadour as it will be overrun with tourists. The Sarlat Saturday market is good, but if you arrive after 9 am, parking will be impossible and crowds overwhelming.

Cahors is also a good place to visit. There are boat rides on the Lot River, a great WWII Resistance museum, a cool medieval bridge, and a good Saturday market. Peche Merle caves and the town of St. Cirq Lapopie are nearby.

Northwest of Sarlat is Hautefort castle (the film Ever After was made in this area). Both the castle and its%26#39; gardens are worth a visit.

If you%26#39;d like to email me at diane@westwindtours.us, with specific questions, I%26#39;d be happy to try to help. My best advice - advoid travelling anywhere in France in July or August.
