Metro Pass

Can metro passes be purchased internationally via the internet? Is there any advantage in doing this? I am arriving in paris by plane and had thought to use the pass to get to accomodation?

You can buy a Paris Pass on the internet - this is a mixed museums and transport card. A 2 day card is E69 and a 5 day is E139. They are posted to your home.

Personally I think they%26#39;re too expensive and would buy a carte orange (weekly metro pass) or carnet (10 single trip tickets) and Museum Pass when in paris, instead of buying the Paris Pass online..

You can get a single trip ticket to Paris from CDG for about E8.50 (get them from the auto machine using a credit card or cash) and then get your transport passes in Paris ,,,,actually, I don%26#39;t know why you couldn%26#39;t buy your general metrol passes from the station at CDG...perhaps someone else can help here????

Hi Wally

I dont think there is any benefit in buying a metro or other pass internationally - in fact I think you could probably only buy a pass for tourists such as the Paris Visite pass, which is generally not worth buying. If you are arriving at Orly or CDG you would be better to buy a ticket into town via the RER Line B (%26amp; Orly Val from Orly) and switching to the metro if necessary or taking a cab from the most convenient RER station to your hotel. You dont say where you are staying in Paris.

Whether your best option is to buy a pass like the Carte Orange or just a daily pass like the Mobilis, or buying a carnet of 10 ordinary metro/bus tickets will depend on a number of factors such as where you are staying, how many days and which days of the week you arrive and leave. If you give this information, I can give you some past threads that discuss various options.

BTW, GympieWally is a great Australian screen name. I am sure regular poster Wizard of Aus would appreciate it.

Thanks Faux and stur. Sounds like the best bet is to get tickets at CDG on arrival. We fly in on Wednesday and leave paris on a saturday. We are staying o at Perfect hostel Rue Rodier.

Are there metro ticket booths at CDG that you get passes from?

Cheers,

Wally

Hi Wally, I assume you could buy metro tickets in a carnet of ten at CDG but I would just buy a ticket for the RER to Paris there (8.50 Euros I think). Your hostel (looks nice BTW) is about equidistant between Cadet and Anvers metros and while you can go to Gare du Nord by RER Line B and change to metro there, the simplest is to Anvers but requires a change at Barbes Rochouart and my recommendation would be to grab a cab which should be less than 10 Euros if there is more than one travelling and you have a couple of bags, It would be more like 5-6 EUros by cab if you are on your own.

As you will be there for the best part of a Carte Orange week, starting from the Monday, if you want to save money and you are travelling before it disappears (do a search for Carte Orange on this forum as its use by date is in late 2007 I think) you could buy that for your transport in central Paris for that week and use either a carnet of metro tickets for the other days or a Mobilis day pass for days you want to use trains and buses from the Wednesday you arrive until the Sunday, when the Carte Orange starts.

When you search about the Carte Orange, you will find information including the need to get an identification style card with a passport type photo as well as the CO itself. A member called IrishRovr did a page on this that is now an %26quot;insider page%26quot; that has some information about this, although the last time I looked it was not up to date about prices - eg carnets of 10 are now 10.90 Euros and Mobilis passes are 5.50 Euros a day. I thing COs are still 16.50 Euros a week so good value for the 6 days from the Monday after you arrive.
