I am more than likely going to buy my Grand Mariner in Paris (still kicking myself for only buying one last time) as it is about the half the price of in the states.
Has anyone done a price comparision between Nichols (?) and duty-free?
|||
Just remember, if you buy it anywhere but %26#39;duty free%26#39;, you%26#39;ll have to pack it in your checked luggage - always a risky proposition!
|||
Oh, I know I will have to pack in suitcase, either in Paris or Chicago depending on where/if I buy but I was just trying to get an idea if it was even worth pursuing.
On my last visit the price was half of what it was in US. A bottle lasts me a long time, it either goes in a margarita just for me or I sip it straight very slowly.
My friends laughed at me when I bought a bottle of triple sec (that%26#39;s what they get in their margaritas) home from the Bahamas but it was like $2. for a liter bottle and if you buy liquor made there you are allowed two bottles.So I got the triple sec and a bottle of fiery rum. Of course my shoulder has never recovered from lugging them in my shoulder bag.

Here you go...from the Nicolas website:

Don%26#39;t know if that includes tax or not - anyone?
It%26#39;s very good on Vanilla Ice Cream too ;)
|||
I know what you mean! It is $28.00 for the small bottle and $46.00 for the large bottle here in my state!
That price is very good!
The only problem with waiting til you get to the airport to buy it at the duty free shop is if they have it on hand.
If you bring it home from the city and pack it in your suitcase, make sure you bring one of those huge zip lock bags and some duct tape to wind around the bottle lid so it won%26#39;t leak and some bubble wrap. Then cushion in your clothing.
This past trip we felt that it was not worth the hassle. It sure is a good price though.
(Just a stupid thought came to me ... Could you pour it into one of the huge plastic pop bottles, pack it the same way and then re-fill your bottle at home? save the label... it would be lighter weight.)
|||
Good suggestion on the plastic bottle.
It would probably work because I know the cheaper liquor here comes in plastic bottles.
the label on my bottle (from France) states .70 e I%26#39;ll have to go to a store here and see what the measurement is. I think it is 750 ml but will check.
I also have a insulated glass holder which I know holds a 1 ltr water bottle that would be easy to pack (coming) that would add an extra cushion. I may even bring my Tupperware glass that the holder is actually for and put it in that and duct tape around the lid. Hey they guarantee their lids to be spill proof. I%26#39;ll have to measure it because I am not sure of it%26#39;s exact size. Then when I get home I can put it in a wine bottle and put wax around the cork until I finish (hic) the old bottle.

janes thanks for the URL, it looks like it is even less than what I paid before even if I add tax (if not included in price listed)
However do you know what the 35 cl means, it%26#39;s hard to tell if it is the same size as I bought before since their bottles are the same shape for all sizes.. is that the size and how does that translate to english. and is not in my French dictionary or phrase book all it has is liter/litre and a conversion from liter to gallon.
Oh and yes it is marvelous on ice cream. That is one thing I do intent on having while I am there.
At Le Relais de l%26#39;entrecote they have a desert that is two scoops of real ice cream, Grand Mariner, almonds and real whipped cream. yum, yum. And yes the restaurant is still there, that was one of the first things I checked when I began my research for this trip.
The forum isn%26#39;t long enough to list all the things I love to eat while I am there and miss when I leave. I can still have the Grand Mariner but nothing even comes close here in MO to the croissants and baguettes there.

35 cl is 0,35 liter, so i guess not that much comparing to any other bottles, like wines 0,75 liter vodka etc.

Hi penny, I find this handy:
http://www.onlineconversion.com/volume.htm
When I did it, 35 centileters I got almost 12 fluid ounces (US) or 3/4 of a US pint. .
35 centileters is the same as 350milliliters - half a regular wine bottle.
Sounds like it%26#39;s the small size,
Oh oh, Here it is at BevMo for $28.99 for 750ml (double the size). So,it%26#39;s the same price as in Paris :( or is that :D

I do know in 2000 I paid approx $18 which was half of what the same size was in TX.
