Paris (5 days) and then where (3 days)?

We are heading to Paris at the end of April/beginning of May. We know we would like to spend 5 days in Paris and then take a train, or drive, someplace else for 3 days. We are thinking about wither Burgandy (wine country) or Merseilles. Any recommendations on either of these (or something else we should comsider?

I have been reading so much about Paris and France, but I am completely overwhelmed!

Thanks!

It will take you most of a day to get to Marseilles, and then another day to get back. The TGV is only 3 or 4 hours, but you%26#39;ll need to allow time to travel to the station at each end, waiting for the train, etc. I think you will feel hassled and unsatisfied with a rush trip to Provence, which begs for a rental car and the leisure to explore beyond Marseilles and the coast. I personally would choose something closer to Paris if you have only 3 days. What about day trips from Paris; for instance, Chartres, Giverny, Mont St. Michel???? Back at nite to your favorite bistro and comfortable hotel??? OR rent a car in Paris and take off. It shouldn%26#39;t be too hard to find hotels in May in any direction including in Burgundy. Have fun.

Hi TravelVW

We just stayed a week in Paris then stayed 3 days in Dijon on our way to Provence. I did the least research on Burgundy beforehand and wow - it was great! Really a nice area, 1.5h on TGV from Paris. Dijon is lovely, and day trip to Beaune was absolutely worth it.

Enjoy!

As you are from America, maybe it would be interesting for you to rent a car and go to Normandy to see the beaches and bunkers and all the memorial sites from WW2. Also see Bayeux with the famous tapestries from the battle of Hastings in 1066.

You could then include a trip to Mont Saint Michel which is like nothing else in this world. I would stay overnight on the island, so that you have the place %26quot;to yourself%26quot; after all the tourist busses have left.

Burgundy is a great area to visit and not to far from Paris, There is so much there : wine, food, history, architecture and the canals, that you are sure not to get bored.

GitteK%26#39;s suggestion is especially good given that Mont St. Michel is about to become a huge construction site and will remain one for as long as the next 5 years. I think they begin large-scale excavating the bay (of silt) this Spring.

WOW! Thank you to everyone for such great suggestions. France is so beautiful with so many choices! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for!
