I will be travelling to Paris at the end of June with a group of around 10 of my friends. We are all in our late 20%26#39;s. We will be there for 4 nights and are trying to figure out the best place to stay. Location is most important.....we want to be close to everything we want to see (all the typical touurist stuff, as well as the metro), but also really experience some of the Paris culture. I have searched the forums but have found no difinitive guide to the various districts. From what I have been able to find, Montmartre and the Latin district sound best.
Can someone help me? We definitely would love to be able to walk out the door and experience live music, good nightlife, intimate cafes, art, outdoor markets, etc. In my head I am thinking of something reminiscent of Greenwich Village in NYC, if that exists, but still easily accessible to the touristy sites.
We are heading on to Madagascar for two weeks from Paris, so are on a tight budget and will likely be staying in hostels, if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

Latin Quarter has everything you want: night life, close to tourist sights, cafes, outdoor markets, markets. 10 minute walk to Rue Moufftard.

Thanks!
The hostel we have found that we like the best is in Montmartre...what is that area like? I am off to find some hostels in the Latin district now!

You should also consider the Marais/Beaubourg, the 4th Arrondisment. It%26#39;s one of the most exciting places in Paris and definitely has more %26lt;%26lt;live music, good nightlife, intimate cafes, art, outdoor markets, etc%26gt;%26gt; than anywhere else in the city. This area is the closest thing to Greenwich Village you%26#39;ll find in Paris.

I agree with metromole--the Marais District--4th arrondisement--is the closest thing to Greenwich Village. It%26#39;s busy and open late and transportation to other areas of Paris is excellent. In order to be in a good area for transportation to other areas of Paris, try to get a hotel near the Bastille metro stop. Get a good map of Paris and check addresses of hotels before booking.

I do agree with Metromole that the 4e is really lively and happening. But a lot of my parisian friends would disagree and think that the 11e distrist (Oberkamp) is more %26#39;in%26quot; and much closer to Greenwich.
