Thinking of going to Chamonix during Autumn half term 28 Oct. to 4 Nov. Is everything likely to be closed? We intended to Mountain bike and do some walking what sort of weather can we expect. Likely to be five couples so any advoce on self catering chalets appreciated.

Mostly shops , restaurants and the sports centre will be open.
Not sure about the Aguille du Midi lift.
It will be quiet though.
Weather, I have been there the same week you are intending going a few times and had 4 feet of snow, rain, sunny, seriously it can be anything.
But it will be stunning , go and enjoy it.

If the weather%26#39;s good, it can be busier over the weekend because of the French Toussaint holidays - but not unpleasantly so. The Aiguille Du Midi should be open, and some others e.g. Brevent, at least for the weekend, and the trains will all be running including Montenvers - lovely hiking. As the previous poster said, it can be anything at that time of year, but I was there last halloween for a week and it was really beautiful, sunny and crisp. You can do some super mountain biking by taking the train up to Vallorcine and riding back to Chamonix.
The tourist office are very helpful about sorting out accomodation

or you could try
http://www.bigfoot-travel.co.uk/
who are Chamonix based and have some nice self-catered chalets - here%26#39;s one for ten -

You shouldn%26#39;t have any problems finding something good as it%26#39;s a relatively quiet time.
hope this helps :)
