Seeing the mountains - Train des Pignes

Hi All,

One of the reasons we want to visit Nice is because it’s the closest we’ll get to the Alps. I’ve read about the Train des Pignes on TA and it sounds like what we’re looking for – a one day out %26amp; back to get a glimpse of the upland scenery. Just confirming; is this our best bet, or is there some other lesser known train that we haven’t stumbled on?

Thanks!

The Train des Pignes is designed to take you as far as Digne - three hours each way, and the second half is uplands Provence, but the first half is a bit flat and dull Var valley

The other option is the Train des Merveilles, Nice- Cuneo via Tende and Breil sur Roya (Italian Alps near) , which is the fantastic heritage sight The Valley of the Marvels. Leaves Nice around 09:30

Check it as its an hour to Tende and only two hours to Cuneo.

Thank you NiceLife, that sounds more like what we have in mind.
