I%26#39;m preparing a trip for a group of my students, and I%26#39;m wondering whether it makes sense for me to take them to Avignon on a Sunday. We can do a tour of the Palais des Papes, and of course, they can visit the bridge. But since it always comes done to %26quot;shopping%26quot; with high school kids, will all the shops be closed if they want to wander around for a while? I have only been to Avignon on a weekday. Thanks!

Escargot is right, most all shops are closed on Sundays. You don%26#39;t mention the month you will be traveling with your students. Depending on the time of year, there is a Little White Train that does a good tour round the city. I now it sounds really touristy, but it does take you around areas you might not walk through. I think it is fun for folks who have never been to Avignon.
Otherwise, there are also other festivites that take place in the center of town. You can visit the Avignon Tourist office website to see if anything is happening on the particular Sunday you plan to arrive.
It is a gorgeous city and just sitting in one of the cafes enjoying a coke or a coffee can be such a pleasure.
Have a good time.

You could also consider taking them to the sunday market in Isle sur la Sorgue which is one of the largest provencal markets in Provence.

Thanks, Escargot and Toutou! Question for you: how can i get them to Isle sur la Sorgue? we are 17 people all together. Is is possible? If we come to Avignon, it will be Sunday, March 18th. I%26#39;ve already made arrangements for a private tour of the Palais des Papes at 1 o%26#39;clock. Any other suggestions would be great! Most of my group is composed of high school students around 17/18 years old. It%26#39;s a day trip from Paris. I thought it would be great for them to have a day outside of the city, so they can see/experience a different part of the country and lifestyle.

If you have a private tour arranged for 1 pm Sunday, then you would need to visit the Isle market prior to the tour. It is a great market and a lovely town, with all sorts of shops and cafes. What time do you arrive into Avignon and where? That will, most likely, determine your ability to haul all those teenagers over to Isle sur la Sorgue.
I%26#39;m not sure about bus transport from Avignon to Isle. I%26#39;m sure it must exist, but, as I live in Bedoin, I don%26#39;t know the time frames. I%26#39;m sure Escargot will be along soon to advise.
It is a great idea (the market). I think the kids would enjoy it. Then, you could head back to Avignon, take the tour, which I also think they will like and then settle in for a snack at the Place d%26#39; Horloge and do some people watching.

You can take the train fron Avignon to Isle-sur-Sorgue. Takes about 25 minutes IIRC. The service is a bit spotty at the best of times and I would imagine especially so on Sundays so may not work for you.
Check www.ter-sncf.com for timetables.

Un grand merci, Toutou et Irishrovr! I haven%26#39;t booked the train tickets yet, as I was unsure of whether it made sense or not to make the trip given that it%26#39;s a Sunday. I do like the idea of it, and I think it would be a great day for the kids. That said, I suspect we%26#39;ll be arriving around 10 am, so it sounds like it just might work out. I%26#39;ll check with the sncf. Thanks so much for your great ideas...any more???
