Transport Options from Biarritz airport to San Sebastian

Hi there,

We are arriving at Biarritz airport on Sat 9th July approx 6pm.

We were wondering if anyone could recommend:

- the best way for us to travel to San Sebastian that night

- approx how long it will take

- whether we need to book this leg of travel in advance

- where we might find timetable info online

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You can take the bus from the airport into Biarritz and catch the bus from there to San Sebastian-Donostia. The trip should be under an hour and does not need to be booked in advance. You can also take the train. A taxi could take around 35 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

By Bus:

Bus #6 from the airport to the center of Biarritz, every 20 min.

Biarritz – San Sebastian bus line, PESA company, phone: (+ 34) 902 10 12 10. Departure point next to the Biarritz Tourist Office.

By Train:

SNCF. Trains towards Hendaye (French Border) Phone: (+ 33) 5 59 48 86 05

TOPO train towards Donostia – San Sebastian, every 30 min. EUSKO TREN company, phone: (+ 34) 902 54 32 10

Train times Hendaye to San Sebastian/Donostia at www.euskotren.es in Spanish and Basque languages only though. These are little local trains a bit like trams actually.

Train times Biarritz - Hendaye at ter-sncf.com/aquitaine/V2/carte_horaires/ind…

iin French only of course. Mostly local trains no need to book. Some go across the border to Irun.

The Euskotren station at Hendaye is outside the main station just a couple of minutes walk.

Hi Robert,

I have a couple of extra questions if you happen to read this post:

1. I was wondering approximately what time it gets dark in June? Where I live it gets dark around 8.30pm in summer, but in other states it can get dark at 6.30pm... If it does get dark early it would make my next question irrelevant!

2. I was wondering if either the bus or train are markedly more scenic than the other? We would like to make the most of every opportunity to take in the sights of the basque region, so if one route takes longer but is far more beautiful we don%26#39;t mind...

Thanks again,

Awenna

The sun will not be setting until after 10:00 pm (22:00) on the coast in mid to late June and later in July.

Thanks Robert.

While I%26#39;ve got you, I was wondering if you can recommend any tapas bars or restaurants which serve great food in San Sebastian?

We are passionate about food and trying to do our research so as not to waste our eating opportunities in one of the best food cities i n the world!

I have booked a table at Arzak which looks like it might be our one big spend restaurant in the whole trip (!!) so good quality %26#39;cheap eats%26#39; is our focus for the other nights.

Thanks a lot.

Arzak is a good choice, but I%26#39;m not that fond of Elena’s cuisine. She%26#39;s a little too creative for me. Juan Mari on the other hand is excellent.

We generally prefer Pedro Subijana%26#39;s Restaurante Akelarre (http://www.akelarre.net/web/index.htm) and Andoni Luis Aduriz%26#39;s Restaurante Mugaritz (http://www.mugaritz.com/).

There are literally dozens of other great restaurants in San Sebastian-Donostia that serve great meals and are quite a bid less expensive. They include Agorregi (http://www.agorregi.com/), Barkaiztegi Sagardotegia (http://www.sagardotegiak.com), a great cider house. There is also Bernardo Etxea (http://www.bernardoetxea.com/).

There is also Restaurante Kukuarri, Miramon Arbelaitz, Restaurante Urepel, and more in this city of great cuisine.

One of our favorites for traditional high-end Basque cuisine is José Juan Castillo%26#39;s Casa Nicolasa in the Parte Vieja (historic quarter). Chef Castillo is still considered to be the master of traditional Basque cuisine.

You may want to download a copy of Maribel%26#39;s Guide to the País Vasco (http://mariblesguides.com) for a little more information on the area and the cuisine.

Ongi pasa!
