Good article today in the Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) about the Salon International de l%26#39;Agriculture now in Paris. Title of the article: In Paris, It%26#39;s the real savoir fair.
When visiting my daugher in Rennes, I really wanted to visit a farm outside the city that invited tourists to see a real working French farm. My friend who was traveling with me is kind of a farm girl (yes, even a half hours drive from Boston, you can still live on a farm!) but we didn%26#39;t have time to make the tour.
Later, when leaving France, I saw that I would have had to declare upon leaving whether I had touched any cows (or something like that - I%26#39;m sure it had to do with spreading animal diseases....) I am sure that if we had toured the farm, I would have petted a cow - a farm is just one big petting zoo to me!

I think the cow question must have been about securing that the Creutzfeldt-Jacobs syndrom (braindisease in cows, sort of....) should not spread across borders.
I live in the country.
As to your petting-inclination towards farm animals: if you ever come to Denmark I will take you on a free tour in my neighbours pig-farm and you can pet all 1000 of them - BUT you will not be allowed to wear a nose peg !!!

Yes there is a question on the USA Customs Declaration form about vusiting farms or being around livestock. It appeared on the form sometime after the %26quot;mad cow%26quot; incidents and/or the %26quot;ffot and moth disease%26quot; scare.
If you check yes they probably examine your shoes and inspect your luggage.
Before the question was there back in %26#39;88 when in The Netherlands we went to a Cheese farm where we saw cheese being made and aged, petted goats, and bought cheese. Now I%26#39;d have to declare the experience!

Sorry about my spelling...forgot to check before sending!

Even at Versaille there is a Hamlet with goats and cows etc. that we touched. Since we left 3 months later I had forgotten all about it!
When we visit our cousins we always go to the cow/goat farm for fresh milk and butter and cream. Also we get fresh eggs too.
We had to tell them we did visit farms upon our return but they just looked at our shoes and shoes in our luggage and asked us more questions about how long (etc.) we had been there.
